iPhone/iPod: UniWarSeptember 10, 2009
UniWar is a turn based strategy game. Just like most other strategy games out there, there’s multiple maps, multiple races, and several units to choose from when doing battle.
Each unit has different speeds, different strengths and different weaknesses, check out the screenshot below for an idea of what I’m talking about.
The gameplay itself is actually quite impressive to me. With all the strengths and weaknesses of each race and each unit, it could take awhile to learn and master this game. Of course it’s not as conprhensive and PC based strategy games, but for an iPhone game, it’s definantly something of value.
One of the cool things about this game is it’s multiplayer. Not just with your friends and family, but internationally through the UniWar network. You can join or setup game on their network, and when paired up with another player, you take turns one at a time. The only addition they need for this is push notifications to let the users know when it’s their turn. Sometimes a players turn can take days, but when creating a game, you can choose to set the time it takes for each turn to be one of the following; 3 Minutes, 10 Minutes, 1 Hour, 12 Hours, 1 Day, or 3 Days.
Sometimes when playing, the other player may abandon you by either quitting the game all together, or from just forgetting its their turn. There’s a little chat system within the game as well, its not put together really well but it does work like its supposed too.
So where do I rate this game? Lets break it down into a few categories.
I couldnt give it a 10 since there are definantly games on the iPhone that have much better graphics, and some of whats been done to other games could have definantly been done to this game. For being a strategy game, the graphics are great, but some small minor improvements would have been nice, for example; Instead of making the game very cartoonish, they could have implemented a 3D system to really push them ahead of any and all possible competition. Although the cartoonish looking graphics do very nice, i guess i just love 3D!
The sound is decent in the game, but what i dont like the most is when your in a menu, you have music, but once your out of the menu and playing the game, there’s no music… I love to hear the music while playing but most of the time you play this game its dead silent. Maybe they will update this?
The controls are VERY simple and easy to use, you definantly dont need a book to figure out the controls. The only issue here is the lack of documentation to spin a player up to speed on the rules of game play, and how each of the races and their units work.
There’s definitely some changes I would like to see in this game, such as more races, more units, more buildings, and more maps, as well as more sounds, better ambient sounds, and music that plays during the game!
If your a fan of strategy games, and you have an iPhone or iPod, pick this game up and get playin! Its not all online only, there’s a campaign mode you can play, as well as your own instant action-style of games you can play as well.
