Rage on PC is a good word to describe RAGE on the PCMay 2, 2013
I just wanted to give a quick timeline of what I have been dealing with on Rage for the PC. I understand that Rage on the console is a different beast and has been getting pretty above average reviews and I can’t comment on those personally as I have not played the console version. I’m basing this all from a PC users perspective.
With that out of the way it’s been way more trouble than I’ve had with a PC game in ages. While Deux Ex: Human Revolution had it’s issues, all those were cleared up within an hour by updating my DirectX runtimes, and updating my video drivers. Problems solved. Rage was simply a train wreck on it’s PC launch, and still isn’t up to the same standard of it’s console brethren. Here is a rundown of what I can remember;
Installed Game, which in itself was 22GB to install from 3DVD’s
Watched open intro.. CRASH!
Run game again, watch long opening intro again….CRASH!.
Look online, find a Rage exclusive driver released by AMD to fix this exact issue.
Installing new video driver… Installation failed. Check version number against older driver, it’s newer so apparently it…worked?
Run game again.
Watch long intro AGAIN… yay! main menu! start new game, bust out of Arc. Wow, Texture pop-up is Horrible!.. here is a video to get an idea of what it looks like. http://youtu.be/1SXxPmYfgg0

Restart game.. intro again as I apparently wasn’t far enough to warrant a checkpoint save.
That was about 4hrs with the game so far…before my first mission or anything, it gets worse. Later on as I have to enter new areas, any new place that requires a loadscreen, the game would crash to desktop and blame the error on something else. (interestingly enough, the software that runs my Harddrive RAID Array.) The work around was to do a quicksave, load the level, have it crash, go back into the game and hit “Continue Campaign” the game for, whatever reason, would then load the level fine. But if I died and it had to load from the beginning of that level again, it would crash back to desktop. Imagine the stress when I only play on Hard. These where the game breakers, bugs that stopped the game cold. I’m not even noting all the graphical glitches involved. Which, I will picture right now.
This video shows some graphical glitches I also get the longer I play the game, at first I thought it might be my cards over heating, but that was quickly reuled out when I shut down the game, started it right back up and it would take the same amount of time for the textures to start getting corrupted. if it was heat, the cards wouldn’t cool down that quickly and would start acting funny much quicker than before. Here is a still image of what the game looks like as soon as you turn around, about half a second later, it goes into full detail. distracting to say the least.

Here is a shot of some of the NPC’s (Non playable Characters) in the game being horribly glitchy. This isn’t really a “one off thing” where someone just clocked there computer too high, this is happening to a MAJORITY. not the minority.

This is just a shot of some really low resolution textures that for whatever reason made it into the PC version. I would think that if a game is 22GB’s (22 GIGABYTES!!!) there is NO reason for such a low quality.

Even though I did have everyone one of these issues while playing, I still had more that I didn’t document since another driver fix which seemed to have fixed the majority. I still get some NPC glitching, texture tearing, pop-up and that “blocking” glitch that was present in the second video after a while.
To further show that this isn’t just “PEBCAK” (problem exists between chair and keyboard)

Stuff about “imporved performance for a bunch of games by random percentage!”
Ok, now check these. This first http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU121AMDCatRagePerfDriver.aspx which doesn’t saying anything about what it fixes…it’s just called a “Perfomance Driver” which is like calling the engine of car a “Bonus” This “Performance” driver is what makes the game to even get past the Intro!.. now this one: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU122AMDCat1110PreDriverV2.aspxwhich again, has several items that fix broken stuff in the game. and finally this one released just the other day http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU124AMDCat1110PreDriverV3.aspxyou’ll notice that it seems to fix a bunch of stuff that was suppose to be fixed in Preview 2. (hint, I have it, and it didn’t, have yet to install Preview 3 though.)
This isn’t all AMD’s or Nvidias fault though, id Software has release several patches for Rage as well to get it to work properly and to unlock more options for PC users. such as being able to select what graphical options we want turned on, which wasn’t available to begin with….which is unheard of for a PC game! It’s sad really. id Software was built on the PC, with games like Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake and they have always innovated and pushed PC’s to there edge. They where once the reason people upgraded. And now they are all about the consoles and just letting PC gamers deal with that consoles port over. That is apparent at this point.
It should never take 2 after a games release before the owner of said game can fully enjoy it. That is ridiculous for a game that took 6months to make and a slap in the face for a game that took 6yrs.
